Termites can be particularly harmful because their activity usually isn’t obvious until the damage is substantial. That’s why arranging regular inspections and/or having Termidor ® preventative barrier with Trelona® bait stations installed around the home to them if they’re in the area is the most reliable approach.

On the other hand, of course, it’s important to recognise the telltale signs of termite activity if you happen to notice any of them. Here are the ones you’re most likely to come across:

Wood that sounds hollow. If you knock on your skirting boards, floorboards or any other wood around the house, you may be able to tell if termites have caused extensive damage. You’ll hear a hollow, slightly echoey sound instead of the solid clunk of timber that is still structurally sound.

‘Mudding.’ Because they travel underground, subterranean termites build up mud to keep them covered and sheltered from daylight as they forage for food. You may find mud built up against the bottom of walls or filling cracks and holes in timber decking or panelling. If you notice any mudding, arrange a professional inspection straight away.

Mud tubes. These are small, tunnel-like structures used for the same reasons as the piles of mud – to keep the termites out of the light – but are smaller and more distinctive. A pest manager will be able to confirm what they are at a glance.

Dead winged termites or just discarded wings. Some termites grow wings and fly out in clusters from their colonies looking for new sites to settle. These reproductive termites can only survive for short periods, so piles of dead ones or their discarded wings may be found from time to time. Their presence indicates a colony is close to your property, and it makes sense to call a pest controller for advice.
