Floods can be enormously disruptive and damaging. If you live in an area where very heavy rain or flooding is common, you may wonder whether an in-ground termite treatment like Termidor can provide the sort of long-term protection expected elsewhere.

The answer is that the Termidor treatment will generally remain in place and keep working effectively even after the soil becomes saturated. During a trial in Townsville several years ago, test plots treated with Termidor were flooded and remained completely underwater for an extended period. The levels of Termidor in the soil remained normal at the time and for years afterwards.

The scientific explanation for this is that Termidor binds tightly to organic matter in the soil and has very little tendency to dissolve in water, so there is equally little chance of it being carried along as the flood water drains away.

During the period after any flooding, it is still a good idea to contact your BASF Accredited Applicator and arrange an inspection for peace of mind. Moisture levels in the soil will probably remain high for an extended period, which can encourage greater termite activity than usual. While the undisturbed Termidor treated zone should still be effective, some untreated soil may have been shifted around – especially if there’s been some repairs to your landscaping – and created a route that termites can use to get to your home without any exposure to the Termidor. Any such gaps in your defences can quickly be treated to make sure there’s once again an unbroken treated zone around your home.
